Beginners Yoga - 6 Week Course

Our beginners courses are a great place to start the practice of yoga or refamiliarise yourself if it's been a while since you have attended a class.

The classes are run in 'workshop' style, leaving room for explanation of the principles of breath and movement as well as personal exploration of these principles during a led practice.

Each week we will introduce new principles and progressively build knowledge over the duration of the course. Each week, participants will be provided with a short home practice to help reinforce what has been learned in class.

Over the six week period you will be introduced to:

   - Foundation asanas (postures) for structural health and well-being
   - Principles of movement & alignment
   - Principles of breathing in asana practice
   - Pranayama (focused breathing)

Classes are limited to a maximum of 9 participants to ensure that each person recieves personal attention and instruction.

Cost - $105.00

Deposit of $30 due on registration, the balance is due 5 days prior to the course start date

Svastha for Health 
Personal Wellness Program

 
The word svastha literally means to 'stay as the self', a place of perfect mental peace & physical health - a place that in todays world can at times seem impossible to attain.
 
Our physical activities from driving in cars to sitting at an office desk for hours on end create stress in the body, and life events, relationship issues etc can have us feeling overwhelmed on an emotional level. 

The ancient science of yoga provides us with numerous tools to improve and maintain health on all levels of being and this program provides the opportunity to understand the core teachings and apply them practically in our lives.

 
This program will benefit anyone wishing to improve their overall level of health & well-being as well as those who are wanting to deepen their existing practice through direct understanding of the profound principles of classical yoga.

Program Structure

The program is conducted over a period of 10 weeks - one 2.25 hour class per week
Each class consists of:

  1. Asana/Pranayama/Meditation/ Mindfulness - Group practice and theory. This part of the class will deal with the essential principles of asana, pranayama, meditation and the mindfulness practices at the root of classical yoga. It will include a led group practice where we are able to apply and experience the principles.
  2. Yoga Philosophy/Psychology -  The Yogasutras of Patanjali are at the root of all yoga practice. They talk about the mind and how to bring it to a state of peace. During theses interactive learning sessions you will be introduced to the core principles and wisdom from this ancient text which you will be able to directly apply in your life.

Program Content 

  1. Essentials in the practice of asanas
    Asana practice is the most well known aspect of Yoga today. There are hundreds (some say thousands) of yoga asanas however, A.G. Mohan in his book 'Yoga for Body, Breath & Minds" points out, that from all of these, there are just 20 that will suffice in providing everything necessary for the structural development that ultimately leads to a state of balance and clarity.
    During this program we will explore these postures and the movement pronciples associated with asana practice. You will also learn sequencing to enable you to develop your own home practice,and gain an understanding of the essentials of correct breathing for asana practice and how this affects our practice on a physical and mental level. 
  2. From asana to pranayama
    Pranayama is an ancient system of breathing techniques that bring health and vitality on a physical and mental/emotional level. You will learn some important techniques of pranayama from classical yoga and how these can be applied for different situations.
  3. Core insights from the Yogasutras of Patanjali
    The Yogasutras are the definitive work on Yoga, written almost 2,000 years ago by the sage Patanjali. This work explains the working of our minds and provides practices that will bring about quietness and emotional balance.
  4. Meditation and Mindfulness
    Sound is one of the most dynamic tools that can be used for meditation as it is deeply linked with the mind and the breath. The use of simple and universal mantras can aid profoundly in focusing and quieting the mind. Mindfullness is at the heart of all classical yoga practice - we will introduce mindfulness to our asana/pranayama/meditation practice as well as discuss how to carry the practice through to our daily lives.

Program Outcome

The goal of this program is to guide you towards maintaining a healthy body and calm mind using the profound wisdom of classical yoga. The emphasis of the program is on individual attention, simple, effective practices and relevant knowledge.

This program will also be beneficial as an introduction to anyone considering our in depth 200 hour program which will commence mid 2014.
