The Heart of Yoga Peace Project supports and trains Yoga teachers in active conflict zones around the world. It nurtures communities of healing, hope and joy in places where suffering and despair threaten to dominate everyday life.

"Even in climates of animosity, terror and warfare an alternative exists: an understanding that all are connected to each other and to source. By creating communities with common values and developing conscious awareness, false barriers are removed and individual change can occur. Yoga is hope for humanity!" Mark Whitwell

Pregnancy Yoga

Pregnancy Yoga Classes

Pregnancy is one of the most joyous times in a women's life as she prepares to bring new life to the world, it can, however also be  very challenging facing the emotional and physical changes that occur during this time. Our pregnancy yoga classes will give you the tools to move through these times of change with ease and grace. You will learn skills that will be beneficial, not only throughout your pregnancy, labour and birth, but also in the years of motherhood to come.

These classes are a time when you can leave all else aside and focus completely on yourself, your needs and connect with your unborn child.

In our pregnancy yoga classes, you can expect the following:

  • A simple, gentle yet strengthening asana practice (postures) supported by the breath

Pregnancy yoga isn't about achieving any 'yoga breakthroughs' and is therefore suitable for any level of yoga experience, from absolute beginner to advanced practitioner. We focus on postures that will:

  • Strengthen your back muscles and help to eliminate or reduce back pain, a common ailment during pregnancy
  • Strengthen your leg muscles, increase your stamina and prepare you physically and mentally for labour & birth
  • Bring openness to the to chest and shoulders, improving circulation and preparing for breast feeding
  • Help to position baby correctly for birth
  • Be beneficial during labour & birth
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Support the natural increase in hip flexibility that occurs during pregnancy

All postures are adapted to suit individual needs and different stages of pregnancy

  • Exercises to tone and strengthen the pelvic floor
  • Pranayama

In our pregnancy yoga classes you will learn specific breathing techniques that bring about a deep sense of calm, inner awareness and focus. This focused breathing will help you move through the physical and emotional resistance that may arise during labour, birth and beyond, helping both you and your baby to remain calm and relaxed.

A mother breathing well, teaches her baby to breathe well!

  • Relaxation

One of the favourite parts of the class! Fully supported with bolsters and blankets, it's now time to rest and allow the benefit of practice to be fully received, leaving you feeling refreshed and re-energised.

Our pregnancy yoga classes are taught by caring, experienced teachers of the highest standard. We promote a nurturing environment and sense of community in our classes. This is a safe space where you can connect with other expectant mothers, share your concerns and offer or seek advice on the various aspects of pregnancy.

We encourage you to start your pregnancy yoga classes as early as possible after the onset of the second trimester and continue on a regular basis for as long as you feel comfortable - this can be for most women, right up to the due date.

Regular and consistent practice reaps the most benefit, therefore all our pregnancy students, after attending a few classes, are offered a simple, short practice that they can feel comfortable practicing at home, in addition to their studio classes.

Our pregnancy yoga classes are conducted in six week programs, which continue on a rolling basis. Class numbers are limited and pre-booking and prepayment is a necessity to ensure your place in class. Due to the popularity of our classes we are unable to accept casual attendance.

Program Cost: $105.00 (1 class per week)

Programs are valid for 6 weeks only. If you are unable to make your usual class, you are able to transfer to any other class within the six week period. Unused classes may not be carried forward to subsequent programs unless prior arrangements are made with the teacher, and are not refundable.

Hear what our students have to say about our pregnancy yoga classes:

"Barbara,
Your class was fantastic - your calm reassurance and good humour every week plus meeting the other preggy women in the Tummy Club (!) has been one of the nicest things about my pregnancy so far. Now that I am leavng Auckland, I'm so gonna miss it! I will definitely be recommending your class to others."

"Having never tried yoga before my midwife recommended it; I was delighted at how much I enjoyed the class. Since starting Pregnancy Yoga I have discovered strength both physically and mentally that has helped me throughout my pregnancy. Barbara’s experience and knowledge is evident in the caring way she instructs the class, and I would have NO hesitation in recommending Barbara or Kelly Street Yoga Studio to anyone looking to start Yoga."

"Hi Barbara
Sorry for the delay in letting you know that I gave birth to a little boy Jack , just 2 days after my last pregnancy yoga session.  I was rapt to have my first drug-free birth (I had an epidural for my last 2 babies) and that the breathing that you taught us was a HUGE help!!!  My midwife was so impressed with how calm and centred I was throughout the labour and how well I was breathing.  So a big thanks to you for preparing me for a lovely birth, one that I am so proud about."

"Pregnancy Yoga with Barbara is a MUST! I've been going now for about 12 weeks and feel so much better for it.  After each class I feel so much happier and re-energised and look forward to each class, knowing how great I feel afterwards.  I really love the fact that the classes are smaller so that Barbara can work with each of us as needed to help us get the most out of our session.  She also talks to us to find out how we are doing and tailors the class to how we feel and what we feel we want from that particular session.  Yoga gets two thumbs up from me!!!"

Hi Barbara,

Just thought i'd update you on the birth of our baby daughter.
She was born 18th May, 3.19kg @ 39wks , so I didn't make it to the wed night class!
A short and drug free waterbirth, was a wonderful experience.  Used my yoga breathing, a TENS machine and the waterbath and that was it.  Brilliant, thank you so much for your classes.

Yoga for Women : Managing the Menstrual Cycle

Yoga for Women - Managing the Menstrual Cycle

meditation

As women, we undergo many physiological changes in our lives that can impact our feeling of wellbeing physically and emotionally. The practice of yoga can greatly help us overcome many of these issues and live our lives in a balanced way, at the very least, reducing the ups and downs common with hormonal change.

Bringing balance to our monthly cycles will have a profound effect on how our bodies respond to the other aspects of womanhood such as pregnancy and menopause.

This workshop, for women only will give you the tools to manage the emotional and physical challenges before and during your monthly cycle.

We will discuss:

  • How to reduce PMS
  • Adapting our practice during the cycle
  • What postures are beneficial before and during the cycle
  • What postures to avoid
  • How to bring balance back to our system at the end of the cycle

We will also discuss some common issues women face, such as pre-menstrual headaches and endometriosis and what we can do to help alleviate the symptoms.

All attendees will receive a yoga practice that is suitable to use during the cycle.

This workshop is open to women only.

Develop a Home Practice

Developing a Home Practice

The benefits of regular yoga practice are vast, not only do they have a profound effect on our physical body, they also bring about transformation on an emotional and mental level.

Yoga classes provide inspiration, feedback and community but a home practice is the best way to explore your practice on a deeper level and keep it personal and in line with your own unique requirements.

A mixture of theory and practice, this workshop is designed to give you the confidence to answer the following questions and more:

  • Where do I start?
  • What posture comes next?
  • How do I prepare to do a particular posture?
  • How do I ensure that my practice is balanced?
  • How do I change the practice to suit the time I have available today?
  • How do I change the practice to suit the time of day, my mood, my energy level etc?

You will learn:

  • The importance of sequencing (vinyasa krama)
  • The fundamentals of sequencing a practice
  • The importance of preparation & balancing (counter pose)
  • Important types of postures to include your practice, to suit your needs
  • How to adapt your practice to suit your needs at any particular time

All participants will be guided in designing their first home practice during the workshop.

The content covered will address the requirements for a general health & fitness home practice, rather than a therapeutic practice, however we will make time during the workshop to answer questions regarding specific issues.

Venue: Kelly Street Studio, 1A Kelly Street, Mt Eden, Auckland

Timing: Sunday, 25th July 2010, 9.00am - 3.00pm (Lunch Break 12.00 - 1.00pm)
